At the heart of our work is a commitment to empowerment and sustainable change. Beyond generating income, our initiatives foster financial independence, enhance vital skills, and address critical social needs directly within our community.
We actively invest in the well-being of our community through quarterly initiatives that focus on providing essential resources and support to marginalized individuals. Every quarter, using a portion of our profits, we distribute basic food rations to those most in need, including widows, the elderly, orphans, and people with disabilities, ensuring they receive the immediate care and assistance they deserve.
Since January 2024, we’ve prioritized financial stability by offering basic financial literacy training to our weavers. Crucially, we facilitate the opening of bank accounts with Mama Bank for those who wish to join, specifically choosing this partner because their requirements are less stringent, making banking accessible to more women. This is a foundational step toward financial independence.
We provide continuous skills workshops focused on refining the bilum-making craft. These trainings cover technical workmanship and strategic colour coordination, directly helping weavers create higher-quality products that are more competitive and appealing to customers both in Papua New Guinea and abroad.
We believe that dignity and health shouldn’t be a financial burden. Through our meaningful #Bilums4Pads initiative, we allocate K10 from the profit of every bilum sold to purchase Queen Pads, which are reusable cloth sanitary pads. This program provides our weavers with a sustainable solution for managing their menstrual health, saving them money, and promoting dignity. Each distribution also includes vital menstrual hygiene awareness and training on the proper care and use of the pads.
This initiative addresses energy poverty within our communities by providing a safe and sustainable source of light. These solar-powered lamps enable women to continue weaving after sunset, reducing their dependence on hazardous kerosene lamps.
In many villages without electricity, weavers often rely on inexpensive torches strapped to their heads, which has led to eye strain and difficulty moving around at night. Quality solar lights are costly and often out of reach, so we created a program that allows women to weave bilums and sell them to the equivalent value of the solar lights sourced from Brian Bell. Instead of receiving cash, they are provided with lights, a practical and empowering alternative.
So far, 20 women have received solar lights through this initiative, significantly improving their safety, productivity, and quality of life.
